Poetry Friday 2/07

From my new book “Small Stories: Poetry and Prose” by J. Sexton

You’re no longer my future;

You’re just a story I left behind,

A scatter of loose-leaf pages

That contain a lie between every line;

And where I once perused you closely,

I now leave you

Abandoned on a dusty shelf,

A painful, age-old reminder

Of how I can so easily let down myself;

But you taught me a lesson,

That even a fairytale can seem so real,

Yet some myths aren’t meant

To be written,

And only in the ending

Can we truly heal.
